Chapter 12

Rudy

Seek out your friends wisely, forever play nice.

“And that’s how I got the jacket. It’s more of a trophy now,” I say to Sheeraz and Matt, who look equal parts disgusted and disturbed by the sheer presence of this beastly coat.

Sheeraz turns away from me before he speaks. “Great story, now take it off? I’ve never felt so uncomfortable around a piece of outerwear before.”

Matt laughs as he continues to study it. “This coat may have singlehandedly brought that wackadoo shit to Skinwalker Ranch, if you ask me. Summoned something evil from beyond.”

While none of us will actually admit to believing in aliens—much like psychics—we’ve frequently obsessed over the possibility of them. We’ve spent many hungover Sundays debating the finer points of Ancient Aliens. A nice balance to Bourdain.

“My God, it’s real cowskin!” Matt exclaims, wide-eyed as he gently pets my shoulders.

“Have you checked your email?” Sheeraz asks as he, too, steps up to poke the jacket. His curiosity won out. “Marguerite and I are trying to find a night to have a triple dinner date soon. I sent some open dates. You may not call Lucy your girlfriend, but you’ve spent enough time together to introduce her to your nearest and dearest.”

A suspect proposition—Sheeraz is notoriously pre-meditative. He never just has an idea. He’s been brewing on something for a long time before a word is spoken or an email drafted.

Grinning, Matt immediately chimes in, “I got it, and Jules and I can make any of the nights work.”

Awesome.

That leaves me in the precarious position of having to agree to at least one date out of . . . I flick through my phone and open the email. Seven suggested dates, which means there’s no valid excuse. They know my schedule isn’t that booked, not even on a good gig month. I’m not sure how to feel about this. On one hand, the pressure on me and Lucy has been relatively low thus far. To bring her to my roommates and their significant others, all together at a table to break bread, could push this casual-see-how-it-goes “relationship” to a new level.

Or stop it dead in its tracks. Whatever that might mean for our destiny.

Lucy’s schedule is usually flexible, too, which only ups the unavoidability factor. I text her the dates with Sheeraz and Matt peering over my shoulder. Damn them.

She immediately responds.
